DIY fabric owl. We sew charming owls from fabric: Pattern and master class. Video on the topic: DIY soft toy

Nowadays, the creation of various souvenirs and interior accessories is becoming increasingly popular. Try using ready-made owl pillow patterns to make an original decoration for your sofa. This item will be a great gift for any holiday.

Materials and tools

To make the same cute characters, you will need the following:

  • owl pillow patterns;
  • paper and pencil or printer to print the finished template;
  • scissors;
  • safety pins;
  • fabric of any available shade or several colors;
  • needle and thread;
  • sewing machine;
  • padding polyester or other filler;
  • eyes and other decor (optional).

As you can see, nothing complicated is needed. If you do handicrafts, you probably already have everything you need.

How to sew an owl pillow

Any soft toys are made using similar technology. If you have already made something similar, making this cute souvenir will not be difficult. The sequence of work will be like this.

  1. Make a pattern on paper. If you have a ready-made owl diagram in electronic form, just print it out and cut it out.
  2. Pin the corresponding parts to the fabric and make blanks in the required quantity.
  3. Fold the paired elements or one main one with the right sides facing inward.
  4. Stitch or pre-baste the seams, leaving an opening for filling.
  5. Turn the product right side out and fill with padding polyester.
  6. Sew up the hole
  7. Sew additional elements (if any) and decorate the product.

Using such a simple and understandable technology, you can make a thing of any complexity.

DIY pillow: pattern

At this stage of work you have two options:

  • use a ready-made template;
  • build the image yourself.

If you find a diagram you like in electronic form, just print the image of suitable dimensions or redraw it from the monitor screen. You can change the scale of the entire workpiece or its individual parts at your discretion. As a first experiment, it is better to take a medium size, within 30 cm. It is difficult to make a product that is too small, and a large one will require more time and patience.

If you only have a photograph of the finished item in front of your eyes, compare what is shown with the existing diagrams. Modify the template to the desired look. In fact, making patterns yourself is not at all difficult, since all the parts are usually symmetrical. In order to make the base of a pillow in the shape of a bird from fabric, it is enough to have half of the blank on paper, and then fold the material in half and pin the pattern along the fold line. By the way, having completed one blank, you can make many different versions of souvenirs, changing the color and material of individual elements.

If you're new to sewing and crafting, grab the most owl pillows. One of the easiest options is shown in the following illustration.

To get a similar product, use one of the blanks below. As you can see, the pillow consists of several parts: the body, eyes with pupils, beak, wings and legs. Additional elements are usually attached with a zigzag seam over the base, while the wings and legs can be done separately, but the work will be somewhat more complicated.

Please note that in the previous version the body is built as one part with a closed contour, that is, it may well be asymmetrical. If the left and right halves are the same, use a second template where the half of the piece is applied to the fold line of the material.

For the simplest way to make the product, use the previous blank, cut out all the parts one at a time, the body in duplicate. Sew the elements on the front side of the owl's front, and then do the work in accordance with the technology described above.

The second option (diagram above) will be more difficult, since you will have to sew the legs separately. By the way, they, like the base, can be made in bulk, but you will need not two, but four parts. The same goes for the wings.

The third pattern given in the section differs in proportions, as well as additional decor. The details decorating the body can be stitched in tiers, then you will get an owl in a dress with frills. It will look especially beautiful if these elements are made of lightweight material and stitched only along the top edge. The effect of volume of “clothes” will be created.

Flat pillows

The easiest way to sew an owl (pattern in the next photo) is to make a product of a simple shape, consisting of two parts without additional elements.

You will actually need to make one seam. Wings, legs and other parts can be cut out of fleece and sewn or even glued onto the base. If it is made from the same material, then the pillow can be sewn along the front side, since fleece does not require edge processing. If you are making a pattern yourself, try to avoid sharp corners and shape transitions. Make the outline smooth.

If this is not possible, for example, you want to show the carved shape of the wings, before turning the product inside out, carefully make small cuts in the seam allowances in “dangerous” places. This will prevent the fabric from bunching up and creasing after turning it right side out.

Volumetric owls

An original and beautiful DIY pillow (the pattern can be made using the following photo) will turn out great if you put in more effort and time. Here you will actually be sewing a stuffed toy, just the right size for the pillow.

In this case, you will need to make many individual elements and then combine them into a single whole. Such things look more impressive and original and can serve not only the functional role of a pillow on which they lie, but also a decorative or utilitarian one, for example, as a place to store a TV remote control.

So, you were presented with various patterns of owl pillows and photos of finished product options. Choose your favorites. Create beautiful accessories for your interior.

As the unsurpassed Coco Chanel aptly said, things made with your own hands are luxury. Therefore, handmade soft toys allow even beginners to increase their positivity when decorating the interior, preparing unique gifts for children, souvenirs for family and friends.

For such crafts you will need patterns and diagrams that correspond to the design, available tools and following a simple technology for their manufacture.

Materials and tools for creativity

For sewing needlework you need to prepare:

  • pieces of fabric, ribbons, lace;
  • thick paper/cardboard for creating patterns, and for the purpose of transferring them to fabric, also carbon paper and pen/pencil;
  • environmentally friendly toy fillers;
  • threads of various tones and strengths;
  • ruler, scissors, awl, pliers, needles, thimbles;
  • small details for the design of the face, fasteners on clothes and decor;
  • iron;
  • sewing machine (if necessary).

Choosing fabric for toys

Based on the characteristics of a particular toy, the following fabrics can be used:

For novice creators of a soft toy with their own hands, it is important to take these features into account so that when transferring the pattern and design, choose the fabric that matches the image.

Simple and primitive soft toys: patterns for beginners

This group of toys, called “primitives,” can be the first step towards making more complex options. They are cut on double folded fabric and sewn from one piece with a head, legs and torso. Separate sewing of the head, ears, legs, and tail is also allowed here.

Most often these are three-dimensional figurines of various animals, fish, and birds. Their simple creation requires care, but does not require special efforts and skills, or a lot of time. Moreover, using one pattern you can create larger products as decorative pillows. The finished handmade craft is suitable for children to play with, as pendants or keychains.

One popular option among beginners is a cat toy using ready-made pattern templates.

Using simple patterns, you can create your own favorite wise owl toy from colorful cotton and printed chintz.

Using the selection with photos, it is easy to understand several steps of completing the work.

A do-it-yourself soft toy, patterns and diagrams for beginners of these simple products allow you to use any fabric with a minimum of decor. “Primitives” made in light colors can be turned into paintable, fragrant gifts.

To do this, they are impregnated by boiling in strong tea leaves, coffee with the addition of vanilla, cinnamon, and then drying in the sun or in the oven at + 120°C. After this, the fragrant souvenir toy can be painted and dressed up.

What to stuff soft toys with

Previously, cotton wool and small pieces of fabric were used to fill soft toys. However, today these materials are being replaced by lighter and more hygienic synthetic materials (sintepon, holofiber, synthetic padding, foam rubber, etc.).

They do not come true, allowing the products to retain their original shape even after prolonged use and repeated washing. It is quite acceptable to use old sweaters made from light yarn in the form of finely chopped strips.

It is also allowed to stuff toys with undyed, cleaned and combed sheep wool (sliver). At the same time, you need to be sure that future owners of such crafts will not have an allergic reaction. The vulnerability of this material lies in its susceptibility to damage by moths and deformation when moistened.

If it is necessary to make some toys heavier (balls, rattles, etc.), soft fillings can be combined with pre-calcined cereals, seeds, husks, and pebbles.

Personally made pillows in the shape of different animals and birds can be stuffed with medicinal herbs (mint, sage, lavender, fennel, lemon balm, jasmine, etc.). In this case, the individual tolerance of the components contained in them should be taken into account.

Step-by-step instructions: how to sew a fabric doll

When making a soft toy with your own hands, patterns and diagrams for beginners are the first step towards realizing your plan.

Next steps are as follows:

  1. Selecting the necessary fabrics, washing them, ironing them.
  2. Transfer the pattern to the fabric and cut out all the parts with allowance for seams and hems (0.5 cm each).
  3. Basting the resulting parts of the future toy along pre-designated lines (starting with the head, and then the torso, limbs).
  4. Sewing all the parts according to these outlines (manually or using a sewing machine).
  5. Filling all elements with environmentally friendly materials.
  6. Final attachment of each part to each other.
  7. Decoration of face, clothes.

How to make a doll's face and hair

For the outer shell of the head, it is necessary to make a bag of the required size from cotton fabric. After filling it with the selected material to mark the neck, you should wrap the lower part 2-3 times with thick threads. Then wrap the head with a piece of flesh-colored knitwear.

To do this, fold it with the front side inward and place the manufactured head on it, mark the lines of the back of the head and neck, then cut out the workpiece and then turn it right side up.

When forming eyes, nose, mouth on the doll’s face, you can use special plastic blanks, buttons, beads, etc.

The second option is sewing/gluing self-made parts from colored fabric or embroidery. Along with this, you can draw the contours of the elements and then color them. The choice of any of the methods depends on what kind of soft toy you should make with your own hands.

Patterns and diagrams for beginners can also tell you which material is best to use for hair, namely:

  • wool yarn, which should be sewn to the head, and then create the desired hairstyle;
  • special tresses (bonded hair on fabric strips);
  • felting yarn;
  • felt for making ponytails/bangs, which, after transferring the patterns onto it, are sewn to the head.

In addition, hair is often imitated by painting it with safe paint of a suitable tone.

Tilda and its varieties

The peculiarity of Tilda dolls, created at the end of the twentieth century by Norwegian designer Toni Finnanger, is the simplicity and clarity of the lines of all details, the use of only natural materials. These ruddy-cheeked toys, unlike any other toys with long disproportionate limbs and small eyes, are decorated in soft pastel colors.

During this time, tildomania has gained sympathy in different countries of the world, and has been enriched with different types, in particular:

Textile bear Tilda

Such a stylized toy, using quite accessible materials, has a more complex method of execution than “human” dolls. The simplest option for making a Tilda bear is to cut out 2 elements, sew them together and fill them. The fabric can be of different textures and colors.

Do-it-yourself soft toy: patterns and patterns for beginners for making the Tilda Hare are not at all complicated.

After cutting and sewing the cut parts on flesh-colored fabrics, you must follow the execution algorithm:

  • filling blanks of body parts;
  • sewing limbs, ears to the body with the head;
  • making/drawing a nose, mouth, eye;
  • dressing the Bunny in pre-prepared pants, a jacket, etc.

Step-by-step instructions: soft toy cat

Just a few simple steps need to be completed to create the charming cat Matroskin:

Making patterns:

DIY toy zoo

Using templates, ready-made patterns, and diagrams of various fauna, you can create your own mini-zoo. These can be homemade bears, monkeys, dogs, seals, giraffes, elephants, deer, hippos and other favorite animals.

Such a nice company will become a bright element of the interior of a child’s room, a source of psychological comfort. The creation of a toy zoo, according to teachers and psychologists, is also an important educational moment.

Fur animal: instructions for beginners

To make such toys, you can use both natural and artificial fur. If it’s easier to work with the latter, then the other option turns out to be truly exclusive. Therefore, it is more advisable for beginners to start with small products made from artificial material. The first step is also to prepare the pattern and cut it to allow for future seams.

It is important to remember this nuance - you need to work with fur not with scissors, but with a sharp stationery knife or a special knife for tailors.

To avoid damage to the fur, short, not deep, sharp movements of the tools are made from the wrong side of the material. The cut out parts are folded right side inward and sewn from the wrong side. In this case, it is necessary to leave small holes for stuffing with filler, which is then closed with a hidden seam.

The last steps are to attach all the elements of the muzzle and add accessories that match the image.

Owl pattern from fabric: how to sew an owl

Beginners can make an owl from just 2 parts of different colors using one of the simplest patterns.

Further work consists of forming a triangle from the cut out elements, connecting the parts first by basting and then stitching (starting from an acute corner). After this, the future head is fixed by pinning this part and then bending the corner to form the beak.

The formed body (the lower part after the pin) needs to be filled with the prepared material and sewn at the bottom. Then sew the beak corner to the tummy, and on the face glue cut out white circles-eyes with black pupils made of beads/buttons. Photo of an owl created in half an hour:

Master class felt dog

To prepare a puppy pattern, a beginner will need a template. The toy is made using pieces of white, brown and black felt, thread, needle, scissors, blanks for eyes, and hot glue in a gun.

Algorithm for further actions:

  • transfer patterns of parts onto felt;
  • cut out all the parts outlined with a ballpoint pen, and then sew them together and leave a small hole for filling;
  • fill the blank using the rough end of a pencil/wooden stick;
  • fastening all parts and completely closing the hole;
  • design of the muzzle, attaching a colorful collar in the form of a ribbon/bow/butterfly, etc.).

To give the toy a more natural look, you can tint the felt with colored pencil lead in several places (inside the ears, on the paws/face/tummy).

How to sew a bunny from felt

Step-by-step felt bunny master class:

  1. Cut out the parts according to the existing patterns.
  2. Sew from the wrong side: first the cut out ears, then the front legs, then turn them inside out through the hole left for filling.
  3. Sew the body (from the inside out), starting from the bottom of the legs towards the head and continue stitching after attaching the ears. Then turn the workpiece inside out, stuff it with filling and sew it up completely, then attach the front legs (with a hidden seam).
  4. Dressing in an outfit with holes for “handles”.

Soft sock toys

The basis for one of the easiest toys to make is 1 sock of an attractive color without scuffs or holes, which has lost its pair. If you want to make a “chubby” toy, you need to shorten it by cutting off the part that covers the foot, and also move the elastic band on top of it. The unworn parts of children's tights that have become small and tight will also come in handy here.

Before starting work, beginners can use a felt-tip pen to mark the location of body parts (head, neck, paws, torso) from the inside out. This will help minimize proportion errors. The working technique allows for combining several colors from other socks to designate a “mask” on the animal’s face, their tummy, paws, etc.

There are many options for creating “sock” toys with the initial production of patterns and measurements for the location of body parts. Many people make cute toys “quickly” by first filling the products and forming ears from the tied ends of the tops of socks, and then drawing the outlines of faces, waists, and various accessories on this figure.

Master class Sock hare

One of the quick options for making a sock Bunny:

  1. Fill the sock with cotton wool or cereal (to make the product heavier for stability).
  2. Measure the distance from the part of the toe sock to the intended neck and tighten this place with an elastic band/thick threads.
  3. Measure a smaller piece for the head and tie it tightly to prevent the filler from spilling out.
  4. Divide the remaining edge of the sock into 2 parts, and then cut out the ears from them, giving them a standing/sagging position and sew them along the cut lines with small thick stitches.
  5. Attach a pompom ponytail to the bottom of the back.
  6. Decorating the toy: gluing oval/semi-oval circles of a different color to the tummy; attaching eye-beads made from denser fabric of the clove and nose.
  7. Hare decoration (bow on the head between the ears for girls, and on the neck for boys).

To create many soft toys using the proposed patterns and patterns, beginners do not need to have sewing skills. The important point here is independence, creativity and the desire to create something unique with your own hands. It is advisable to involve not only adult family members in this pleasant activity, but also children, subject to the safety rules for handling sharp objects.

How to sew a primitive cat:

Soft toys made from socks:

The owl is not only a smart and beautiful bird, but also a popular symbol today. It is believed that such a toy gives children calmness, perseverance and patience, and increases their learning abilities; gives young girls mystery and femininity; for young men - strength; and people experiencing financial difficulties - financial well-being. And if you make an owl with your own hands quickly and simply from fabric or other materials, then the power of such a talisman will increase many times over.

If it seems that sewing a forest beauty is difficult and for this you need to have tailoring skills, then this is a mistake. Even children can cope with the creation of the product, and they will gladly take part in the birth of a new family friend.

We sew an owl with our own hands from fabric in a step-by-step tutorial

To sew a simple owl from fabric, you do not need to purchase any special materials. Everything you need can be found at home. So, for this you will need:

  • Pattern or templates (download and print on a printer, or redraw by hand);
  • Pieces of fabric;
  • Threads;
  • Scissors, needle;
  • Buttons and other decor;
  • Glue (if an applique will be made);
  • Filling (holofiber, fabric, ordinary cotton wool, etc. for a voluminous toy).

The list is small, but the scope for imagination is huge. You can choose any fabric, but it should not crumble around the edges or be see-through. Old clothes are suitable for this craft, for example, jeans, bright sundresses, a jacket and even a terry towel. Each time, even with the same pattern, the result will be different, but always excellent.

The first thing you can make from fabric is applique. The simplest and fastest option, which both children and beginners in the handicraft world can easily cope with. To do this, you can take this diagram or those presented below.

  1. We draw by hand or print the template we like. To begin with, you should choose a simple one, from 6-8 elements. It is best if it is made of dense material, such as cardboard or an old box;
  2. We distribute the available pieces of fabric among the parts of the owl’s body. For applique, it is best to use felt - its edges are quite dense and do not require processing. The base can be made colored, the belly - plain (or vice versa). The main thing is to avoid a large number of colorful details, but this is also acceptable if you are planning a funny comic toy;
  3. Using a pencil, thin chalk or a piece of dried soap, trace the outline of the template and transfer it to the fabric;
  4. We cut out the parts along the contour and assemble the future owl. If you are satisfied with the result, we take up the glue and carefully glue all the parts. You can choose any sequence (either start with small elements, or, on the contrary, from the abdomen);
  5. The finished toy must be allowed to dry in a ventilated place for at least 6-8 hours so that the glue dries and the unpleasant smell from it disappears.

Below are patterns that you can print out and use to create a variety of colorful owl appliqué designs.

You can use felt or regular fabric.

The appliqué technique is also suitable for decorating children's clothing, bags and bedding. For example, owls will look very beautiful on a pillow.

We create an owl from fabric quickly and easily with a detailed description

If you have mastered the appliqué technique, you can move on to mastering the sewing technique. It's best to work with soft felt, but almost any fabric you have on hand will work. Since to make an owl in this case you will need to work with scissors and a needle, you must be careful. If children are involved in creating a toy, they must be supervised by adults. The process itself is quite simple. There are two differences from the previous technique: to attach the elements we will use a needle and thread, and to make the owl voluminous we will use filler.

  1. As in the previous technique, we find a template or pattern we like, or we come up with it ourselves. We transfer it to the fabric and cut out the details of the future owl.
  2. In order to sew one part to another (wings, eyes, belly), it is best to use a hand stitch called “forward needle”. The technique of doing it is that one stitch is made from the face, the other from the outside. The length of the stitch and the skip on the front part of the product is equal.
  3. Having sewn together the parts of the front and back sides of the owl, we proceed to the main thing - sewing together the two halves of the owl. To do this, you need to combine the parts, fasten them with sewing pins and sew them “forward with the needle” in the same way, leaving about 2-3 cm unsewn.
  4. We fill the toy with filler through the remaining hole.
  5. We complete the seam and hide the end of the thread inside the toy.
  6. The resulting product can be decorated by gluing plastic eyes, bows, buttons, pockets, bow ties, etc. to it.

Depending on the pattern used, a wide variety of owlets can be obtained.

By sewing a loop to the resulting toy, you can use it as an interior decoration (crib, Christmas tree, fireplace, bookshelves) or a key ring.

Video on the topic of the article

You will learn a few more ways to sew an owl from fabric by watching the video master classes.

You won't believe it - it's simple. Two parts and 5 seams - or six, you don't need to be a good seamstress of all trades. The work captivates with the simplicity and elegance of the solution. Just 30 minutes, and the fabric owl is ready - believe me, or better yet, check it. Read the description of the work, look and see: half an hour - and the charming owl is sewn.

For a product measuring 15x10 cm we will need:

  • Red fabric 17x10 cm - with a margin.
  • Yellow 10x10 cm;
  • White or paper (for eyes, 2 buttons (eyes).

Owl-wise little head - job description

DIY fabric owl pattern

1. Point one - owl pattern: the dimensions in the photo correspond to the product 15X10 cm.

rice. 1 Cutting out the details

Cut out parts A and B from paper. Cut out two parts from fabric of the corresponding colors - red (torso) and yellow (belly). Mark indents for the seams (Fig. 1).

Fig.2 Sweeping away the owl

2. Place part B with the wrong side on the wrong side of part A, sweep on the left side (Fig. 2), leaving a gap of 5-10 mm, stitch. Connect the right parts of the parts in the same way - we get a triangle. Important: turn the resulting owl blank inside out - don’t forget if you have a one-sided pattern or the color of the backside does not match the front side.

Fig.3 We sew two parts of the product

3. Baste and sew the top of the triangle. The length of the seam is 5-7 cm - approximately 1/3 of the length of its side. Thus, the yellow part is located inside the red corner (Fig. 4), nested inside.

Fig.4 We pin the corner - we fix the blank of the head and beak

4. Form the head. Secure with a pin, separate the stitched “corner” from the main part of the workpiece (Fig. 4). We will bend it in the next step.

Fig.5 MK Owl made of fabric with your own hands - the final step - we complete the formation of the body and beak

  • Bend (throw) the corner of the workpiece down (or forward, towards you) - we have made the long-awaited beak of an owl.
  • Stuff the body tightly with sewn padding polyester (foam rubber) to the level of the pin. The body should be rounded and elongated, almost spherical.
  • Selecting and sewing the lower part of the owl is the last step of our MK.
  • Sew the tip of the corner of part A to the yellow belly (piece B) - see fig. 5. We select threads according to the color of the product.
  • Cut out small 1.5-2x1.5-2 cm circles from white thick fabric for the eyes. Glue with a pencil or silicate fabric glue. After waiting for it to dry, sew on large black beads or buttons - if you have blanks for toys, great.

On a note:

  • To understand the principle, you can cut out the parts from paper and fold them, as suggested in the photo.
  • What fabric to use for sewing an owl - it could be linen or chintz. But maybe something more dense, flock or corduroy - the main thing is that it does not stretch and allows you to stuff the toy tightly. If the fabric has a double-sided pattern, that’s great: you don’t have to worry about mixing up the front side and the back side.
  • The eyes are an important element: to prevent the fabric from wrinkling, it is easier to glue it on - with textile glue, using a glue stick.
  • An ingeniously simple solution can be used differently: increase the size of the pattern - you will get an owl pillow in the same 20-30 minutes. And if you reduce it, you’ll get a cute pincushion—experiment.

I repeat, first listen to the advice: to see how easy it is to sew an owl, to understand the sequence of actions, you can cut out a pattern from paper and repeat the step-by-step MK described above. Believe me, this will make the work very, very easy. Using this principle, you can sew an owl toy, or you can, by increasing the size, make a pillow. You can use this pattern and the same principle to crochet blanks - but that will be a completely different story :)

An owl made by yourself is a cute toy that will not only decorate the interior, but will also serve as a good symbolic gift for friends and acquaintances. Moreover, things made with your own hands are usually more valuable. Next, we will describe how to make an owl pattern and sew such a toy from ordinary fabric or bright felt.

Owl pattern

It is very easy to create a pattern for an owl toy. In the easiest version (if you make it from felt), you need to draw a rounded barrel body or just a circle, and add ears in the upper part. The basis of the owl pattern is ready, and everything else is decorative elements that will give the toy individuality and make it more interesting. Separately, you need to draw and cut out the following details: large eyes, wings, beak. If you wish, you can add paws, an apron, a scarf, a cap, half-closed eyelids, and a bow to your owl.

A different pattern is needed for a toy made from a different fabric. You will need two circle segments cut from paper. One of them should be at an angle of thirty degrees, the other - at eighty-five degrees. This will create two triangles.

Fabric toys

A fabric owl toy (pattern: two triangles) is even a little easier to make than a felt one. From any fabric you need to cut out parts according to the pattern and sew them without sewing up the bottom. When choosing fabric, keep in mind that the small triangle will be in front, and the large one will be the back and face of the toy. If you have fabric of dark and light shades of the same color, then it is better to cut out a small triangle from a darker fabric.

The resulting cone needs to be filled with cotton wool, padding polyester or other padding material, but first mark about a quarter of the cone on top with a pin (this part does not need to be stuffed). Now you need to prepare the bottom for the toy. Cut a circle out of thick cardboard and cover it with fabric, and when the toy is tightly stuffed with filling, sew up the bottom with hidden stitches. Now you can sew the tip of the remaining empty corner with a few stitches to the main part of the owl toy - the body.

Now you can start decorating the toy. At a minimum, you need to sew big eyes on the owl - separately the whites and irises. You can add a bow or an elegant butterfly.

Felt owls

Making an owl pattern (it’s very interesting to make it with your own hands) from felt is a little more complicated, although such a toy is relatively easier to sew. Felt, for example, does not require any processing of cuts, since it does not crumble. It is enough just to cut out all the details from the material of the corresponding color and sew them to the base. Small parts can simply be glued on.
